GLASS_Trea.S.U.Res project is based on alkali activation under strict constraints. The main purposes are: maximized reuse of waste glass (fractions of cullet not recycled, but typically ‘abandoned’ in landfills); minimized addition of valuable minerals (and possible exploitation of other inorganic residues); reduced amount of alkali activators (e.g. alkaline solution with molarity not exceeding 3M, namely ‘weak’ alkali activation) and replacement of alkali silicates with alkali hydroxides. According to an interdisciplinary approach, this project is based on the collaboration between the research groups of the University of Padua (UniPD), the University of Modena Reggio Emilia (UniMORE) and the University of Campania (UniCaLV).

METHODOLOGY & ACTIVITIES

MATERIAL SELECTION

Selection of waste glasses and ‘active’ supplementary materials developing stable bonding in alkaline solution through mineralogical studies, LCA studies and mechanical testing.

Deliverables
DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE DENSE ARCHITECTONIC ELEMENTS

Manufacturing of architectonic composites based on inert material  embedded in glass-based matrix, minimized glass-based matrix and control of the interface.

Deliverables
DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL CELLULAR MATERIALS

Development of highly porous (P>80%) foamed bodies through direct foaming, Incorporation of microspheres and DIW.

Deliverables
EXTENSIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ANALYSIS AND EXPLOITATION

LCA studies on dense and porous inorganic polymers and activation of end-of-life materials.
